HOCKRIDGE FAMILY GROUPS

The index below is to identify the groups shown on the Hockridge A - Z Index - hopefully with more research these groups can be joined together. The largest group are the descendents of John Hockridge 1640 of Kilkhampton, however there are no Hockridge's in Kilkhampton before this date, prior to 1640 the Hockridge family seems to be mainly in Devon in the Bideford area.

The earliest document I have at present is the Will of Richard Hawkridge 1545 of Abbotsham - I have not yet however managed to transcribed the will but as soon as I can will put on webiste.

 

GROUP 1
Descendants of THOMAS HOCKRIDGE C1754 Welcombe, Devon
It has not been possible to identify Thomas's parents as the Parish Records for the time of his birth do not survive. Thomas is buried in Clovelly Churchyard
GROUP 2
Descendants of JOHN HOCKRIDGE 1640 Kilkhampton, Cornwall
No fathers name is given on John's baptism, just his mothers name Anne Haukeridge. This suggests he was the base born of Anne, I have not been able to trace Anne's parents, she was not baptised in Kilkhampton.. This group also includes James Hockridge 1828 of Bideford who was the first Hockridge traced in Wales. And William Hockridge 1774, several members of his family went to Australia around the middle 1800's
Group 3 Descendants of JOHN HOCKRIDGE C1684 place of birth unknown - married in Alwington
I have not yet found a baptism for John, also no age was given at the time of his death so his year of birth is approximate.
Group 4 Descendants of THOMAS HOCKRIDGE C1746 Bucklands Brewer, Devon
I cannot find a baptism for Thomas. His seems to be the only Hockridge Family in Buckland Brewer, but his children do not appear to have remained in Buckland Brewer.
Group 5 Descendants of JOHN HAWKRIDGE c1771 Bovey Tracey, Devon
Whilst most families with the early Hawkridge spelling eventually used the Hockridge spelling. There is however an exception and that family was from Bovey Tracey, they retained the spelling of Hawkridge and this line is listed on the Hockridge A - Z as Hawkridge. I have not been able to establish yet who this John is.
Group 6 Descendants of GRENVILLE HOCKRIDGE c1826 Hartland, Devon
The Census results show Grenville as being born about 1826 in Hartland, Devon but I cannot find his baptism. In 1841 he seems to be a boarder at a school in Bideford. His marriage certificate gives his fathers name as John Hockeridge. Farmer. Grenville's abode on the marriage certificate is given as Holwell.
Group 7 The Hockridge's from Tavistock, descendants of THOMAS HOCKRIDGE c1790, this group includes John Hockridge 1821 who moved to Durham to work in the mines. I have checked the Tavistock records and can find no baptism for Thomas.
Group 8 Early Northam Hawkridge/Hockridge Families.
I have put Peter Hockridge c1567 and Harry Hockridge c1569 together - they are possibly brothers as they were both having children at the same time in Northam.
Group 9 Descendants of John Hockridge c1803 born place unknown (Cornwall)
From the 1841 Census it looks like John is from Kilkhampton but I can find no baptism for him. He had died before the 1851 Census.
Group 10 Descendants of WILLIAM HOCKRIDGE C1783 of Kilkhampton
There are two possibilities for William - 1781 son of William Hockridge and Mary Trick or 1785 son of Thomas and Mary Trick - Williams children were all born in Devonport/Stoke Damerel, Devon
