Welcome to the Hockridge One Name Study - researching the Hockridge name Worldwide

The purpose of this website is to share the information collected with others, but also to collate that information to create a One Name Study of the name Hockridge and its variants (Hockeridge, Hawkridge, Hawkeridge, Hauckridge.

Since I began this website, I believe the original name was Hawkridge.

There are several possibilities for the origin of the name Hawkridge. There is a hamlet in Somerset called Hawkridge, which some believe was created during the time of William the Conqueror, and possibly the name has a French origin. However also near Hawkridge there was a Roman Encampment called Hawkridge Castle, making the origin of the name possibly much earlier. As you can see there is still some way to go to try and narrow down the possibilities.

At this early stage I will just add what information I can and see how the site develops. Our family descends from Thomas Hockridge c1754 of Welcombe.
