John was born about 1852 (1) in Woolfardisworthy, Devon. He married Lucy Andrews on 3 Apr 1879 (2) in the Zion Chapel in Bideford. Witnesses to the marriage were Susan Hockridge and John Moore.

Lucy Andrews was born 1861 (1) in Clovelly Devon. Her parents are John Andrews and Prudence Hockridge. Lucy is Johns second cousin.

John became a farmer after his marriage, but by 1901 had changed professions and was working as an Insurance Agent. John and Lucy had 5 children.
